Alaska Burning— Details

Alaska Burning

Jerry Ray Nelson

Memoir

Eagle, a small town in bush Alaska, is home to a group of Native Alaska firefighters who have been together for over twenty years, fighting fires in the United States and Canada. These stories convey the danger, camaraderie and humour of the situations encountered by these professional firefighters.

For many years the author was a crew member and boss of the EFF -- Emergency Fire Fighters -- who specialize in making fire breaks and mopping up after the flames are out. These close-knit groups are known for heroic action and the will to survive long backbreaking days.

ALASKA BURNING — Reviews

Ellen Moore in Heartland News (Fairbanks), 1998: “Looking out from inside Alaska’s wildfires”
Rather, Nelson mentions the various mistakes that the inexperienced make, from wearing the wrong fabrics to treating the more seasoned firefighters with less than the proper amount of respect. In the code shared among firefighters, according to Nelson, when a rookie’s work is sloppy, you don’t let him get away with it.
