The Spiral Road is both an evocative sequel and a haunting prequel to Laurel Buck’s previous volumes of memoirs, Stream of Memory and Roots beneath the Pavement. Her life’s journey now takes her from her adopted home in Alberta to her spiritual home in Ireland — the original home of her Quebec ancestors — where she discovers that the attachment to home and hearth is as deep and as binding as the longing to escape it.

“Taking on the mantle of the Celtic bards of old, the author tells some of her story in poetry, and bravely shines a light into the darker corners of her own life’s landscape. This book is both a meditation and a celebration, as well as being, in the author’s words, “a multi-faceted love story.” It will strike a resonant chord with all who read it.”
–Brian Brennan.

The author’s ‘pilgrimage’ takes her to three homes. She returns to Megantic County, Quebec, home of her early childhood, and to the family cottage in the Gatineau. She and her husband make several trips to Ireland, home of her ancestors, where she is touched by a warm welcome and by a strong sense of belonging.
