This Czech poet’s five previous books were written and published in his native language. This volume has been translated into French and English as the poet’s contribution to Canadian multiculturalism. Living in Canada since 1968, this B.C. poet has “a very descriptive and consistent voice. The poems are something of a map of the poet’s movements, both physical and mental.” –Jantine Saul

Down in the old quarter

we couldn’t find a snack bar.

Not a single ship under the rusty cranes.

Three o’clock in the afternoon

and the streetlamp still lit.

I could sleep here —

sleep

with eyes wide open

fixed on the horizon.
