The author as an orphan of 14 is put to work in her sister’s home. Her unhappy existence is compounded by the Russian soldiers. In the winter of 1956 she is witness to a terrible incident involving the soldiers and goes into a state of shock.

Matilda stands in the blood-soaked snow after witnessing the atrocity. Hours later, she finds herself walking across the border into Austria, hoping to find her grandfather in Canada. What follows is the unplanned journey of this girl who had never left her village. The people who touch her life along the way are vivid yet mysterious.
